Vice Mayor Bernard Al-ag is eyeing the vice mayoralty race in next year’s election but said he will defer to the decision of the party leadership where he belongs.
Al-ag is a member of HugpongsaTawongLungsod founded by President Rodrigo Duterte. He is also a member of the newly-formed HugpongngPagbabago, a regional political party founded by Mayor Sara Duterte.
“As an incumbent I am interested in the vice mayorship but we still need to consult the leadership of the local party,” he said in an interview. “I will respect whatever the decision of the party is.”
Al-ag, a former councilor prior to taking over the position left vacant by Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte (through political succession), is a third termer. However, his term was interrupted which leaves him an option to still run for councilor in next election.
“I have an option to go back to the Council but it is my brother who will run as councilor this time,” he said.
It is still eight months before the May 2019 elections but local officials are already starting to finalize their plans for their political future.
Al-ag said there are more or less nine last termers in the City Council including him although his case is different due to succession. The others are Councilors Leah Librado, NiloAbellera, Jr. and Joanne Bonguyan in the first District; Al Ryan Alejandre, Marissa Abella, April Marie Dayap and Jimmy Dureza in the second District; and Rene Elias Lopez in the third District.
Third District Councilors Jesus Joseph Zozobrado and Avegayle Ortiz are first termers who confirmed they will run again next May.
“I want to run again as I still have many plans for my district and work at the City Council although it will all depend on the plan and decision of Mayor Sara,” Zozobrado said. Zozobrado replaced his sister Rachel Zozobrado who has been appointed as Labor Attache previously to Australia and now to Israel.
Ortiz, who replaced her mother Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz, said she will still run in the next election instead of her mother.
Al-ag said there are other councilors who still have a term or two but who have decided not to run in next year’s election. Some of them have been offered positions in the national government but they have yet to decide if they will accept it.(lovely carillo)
