ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Task Force Avian Influenza has continued its monitoring even as this city has been declared free from avian influenza.
Dr. Mario Arriola, city veterinarian officer, on Thursday said the monitoring is focused on the traveling or migratory birds since the month of September nears.
It has been noted that every September, migratory birds flock to the wetlands of Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology (ZSCMST), which also serves as bird sanctuary in this city.
Arriola said included in the monitoring are the wetlands in 18 of this city’s 98 barangays.
He disclosed there were reported “questionable mortality” at a poultry farm in Barangay Cabaluay but laboratory analysis on blood samples taken yielded negative of bird flu.
He said they conduct periodic fecal analysis on Barn Swallows that flock daily and stay overnight on electric cables in the city’s commercial center.
He said information campaign is also being intensified to drum up awareness on avian influenza.
