The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) through the different police stations started yesterday the processing of applications for barangay police.
DCPO Director Sr. Supt. Alexander Tagum said the initial screening will be done by the police stations afterwhich, results will be endorsed to his office.
DCPO has considered in reactivating the barangay police, this time, with an increased number to augment the police force.
“The original plan is five per barangay out of 182 barangays in Davao City, but we see na ang mga police station diri sa downtown nanginahang-lan ug mas daghan ang volunteer police auxiliary, so mas daghan gyud ang mga kuhaon namo from this area,” Tagum said.
Those who will be hired will receive P6,000 monthly allowance, uniform, batons and whistle for their use, Tagum said.
He said DCPO needs about 910 barangay police or volunteer police auxiliary to help the regular police officers in securing the city, people, and properties. The members of the barangay police will be distributed to different areas and they will be expected to also do patrol.
“So that when we start our Oplan Iron City, mas daghan mga police ang inyong makita sa Davao City,” Tagum said.
Based on the agreement between city hall and DCPO, it will be the DCPO that will take charge in the processing of barangay police applications. The selection will also involve drug and neuro-psychological tests.
“Kami na ang magprocess sa ilang applications unya kami pud ang maghatag ug training sa mga makuha nga aplikante,” Tagum said.
Tagum said it will be a long training which will cover values formation, courtesy and discipline, human rights, self defense, legal seminars on proper service of warrants, proper search and basic police tactics.
The barangay police however have limited functions. They will not be involved in high risk police operations but will only serve as third and fourth eye of the police operating team, Tagum said. Richy Nalagon
