The city is eyeing a P30 million budget for the hosting of the Alveo IRONMAN 70.3 Davao, a triathlon event considered the biggest in Asia and the world slated on October 25, 2018.
“With the Ironman we hope to bring the world’s attention to Davao and Mindanao,” Mayor Sara Duterte said during a press conference with the Ironman organizer and sponsor.
“The target budget for Ironman in Davao is P30 million. If we can gather the budget from sponsorships then the city will not spend anything for the event,” Sara said.
However, she assured everyone that the city will come up with a counterpart budget in case the total budget is not raised.
The IRONMAN triathlon event was hosted by Mactan, Cebu in the past six years so City Sports Development Division-City Mayor’s Office (SDD-CMO) officer-in-charge Michael Aportadera said it is a great opportunity for Davao to host the event.
Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, president of Sunrise Events, said he expects around 1,000 participants for the first year of the Alveo IRONMAN 70.3 Davao.
“Up to 60 to 75 percent of the participants will be Filipinos with foreign participants from 25 to 45 countries,” Uytengsu said. While there will be only one or two participants from each foreign country, he said, what is important is to see the United Nations flags lining up in the finish line.
Uytengsu said he expect athletes from all walks of life to participate in the triathlon in Davao. The largest group expected are participants from the late 30s to early 40s age bracket.
“We will also embrace gender diversity as we will have a lot of female athletes who will also come from different socio-economic categories,” he said.
Aniceto Bisnar Jr, chief Operating officer of Ayala Land, Inc., said they hope the triathlon will bring lots of tourists and lots of tourism noise to Davao so people from abroad will see the beauty of the city.
Ayala Land, Inc. through Alveo, is a major sponsor of the event.
