The Cobra-PAL Philippine Dragon Boat Federation (PDBF) team snared four gold medals at the recent 12th International Dragon Boat Federation World Championships in Ontario, Canada.
The Filipinos ruled four categories in the annual dragon boat tilt, namely the 200m, the 500m mixed event, the 200m premiere small boat category and 500m mixed senior small boat category. The Philippine team bested rivals from powerhouse dragon boat countries like Hungary, Macau, Italy and Puerto Rico.
Marcia Cristobal, president of the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation, said they were ecstatic to win the medals because they have gone through a lot before putting up their gold winning performance. “Actually we encountered a lot of problems like ‘yung problem sa visa… ‘yung time zone, that’s a big adjustment on our part. 12 hours behind ‘yung Canada sa Manila time,” said Cristobal.
“’Yung time of competition ‘yun ‘yung time na natutulog tayo sa Pilipinas so a lot of adjustments for us.” Last year, the Philippine team copped two golds, one silver and one bronze at the World Dragon Boat Cup in China. The Filipinos finished second overall in the China event.
