Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc (DCCCII) Vice President for Industry Engineer Wilfredo Teves urged dairy producers to improve production to address the one percent produce nationwide.
Teves statement was in response to Senator Cynthia Villar, who has asked industry players to improve the livestock sector and also improve the dairy industry, which only produces one percent of the demand for milk and other dairy products.
Teves said more people who are into dairy business are encouraged to attend training or use their property to plant grasses.
“One thing that we noticed they (dairy produ-cers) just get the cow and that’s it but what we want them to do is they must plant also the right grass for the animals,” he said.
This is what other countries are doing so that they can produce more animals and yield more milk. He said this is what the Chamber would like to happen in Mindanao.
Teves said the Cham-ber has been working with the industry association who are active in producing dairy. During the Davao Agri Trade Expo (DATE) 2017, Teves said the business sector has given the Philippine Carabao Center space during the event to showcase their products and services. DATE 2017 high-lighted livestock, hogs, poul-try, gamefowl and aquaculture industries.
The Philippine Carabao Center is an attached agency of the Department of Agriculture established in 1992 to breed and cross carabao based on high-yield Murrah buffalo (native breed of Haryana state of India) in the Philippines as a multi-purpose animal that can be raised for milk, meat, hide and draft.
“We’re also encouraging the Philippine Carabao Center since they’re very successful in Nueva Ecija we’re also encouraging them to do more projects here to propagate the good ideas,” Teves said.
He said they are also working with Mindanao Alliance of Dairy Industry Stakeholders Association (MADIS).
A dairy producer in Calinan is still operating but the demand is bigger than it can supply.
“The reason we have to improve our dairy produce,” Teves said.
