Major players in the country’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector are eyeing the city as the next Silicon Valley given its business-friendly environment and ideal peace and order condition.
Silicon Valley is the name given to that portion of the San Francisco Bay Area which serves as home to thousands of technology startups and largest ICT corporations in the world that include Facebook, Google and Apple.
“There are lots of locators coming over to the Philippines. Davao has a more controlled environment to start it off since it does not have the historical mistakes that other cities have committed in the past,” Ryan Guadalquiver, managing director of Hewlett-Packard Philippines said during the plenary session of the Livelihood Exchange (LIVEX) Philippines 2015 at SMX Convention Center.
Guadalquiver was one of the panelists in the “Innovation and Entrepreneurship Toward Building a Business Startups Ecosystem in Mindanao and the BIMP-EAGA Development Corridors.
The Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) is an economic cooperation among the sub-regional economies that aims to promote itself as a single market for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Economic Cooperation.
He said there are many startups in the city that are innovative and can make it big if managed properly and given the right ecosystem. Technology has been consumerized, he added, so there are lots of ways to tap the EAGA market.
“It may not be Silicon Valley it can be called anything but we must work out a niche,” he said.
Andrew Wong, chief executive officer of Make A Difference (MAD) in Malaysia, said there is only one Silicon Valley and that is in the United States. It has become a mecca where 60 percent of the population is foreigners that is why it has become global.
“There is no way we can imitate Silicon Valley but we can make our own depending on our ecosystem,” he said. That can be in Davao or in Manila or anywhere in the country but it does not matter since we can build our own ecosystem anywhere.
