Mohd Jafri Bin Mohd Sharif, the Consul General of Malaysia, told the Mirror that his office is in discussion with the city’s tourism sector about holding a “Davao Night” in Kuala Lumpur.
Sharif said the proposed activity was discussed following AirAsia’s announcement of its new Davao-KL route that takes off on December 21. He said they are planning to launch the this before December 31.
“It’s an event to promote Davao in Kuala Lumpur. It’s not yet completely discussed but we already initiated this kind of event before,” he said.
He said plans are afoot to organize a “Davao Night in Kuala Lumpur” and a “Kuala Lumpur Night in Davao” to promote both cities.
“There’s a lot of people in Kuala Lumpur who don’t know what Davao is all about and it seems like (even in) Davao itself, they don’t know about Kuala Lumpur,” Mohd said.
AirAsia’s new Davao-KL flight was announced by CEO and President Anthony Francis Fernandes at the 4th Davao Investment Conference at SMX Convention Center where he was guest speaker.
This flight takes off four times a week at a P99 maiden fare for booking from July 21 to 30, 2017 within a travel period of December 21, 2017 to August 28, 2018. The new route is the airline’s fourth from Malaysia to the Philippines after Manila, Cebu and Kalibo in Aklan.
Fernandes said that Davao City was one of the first cities AirAsia flew to when it started operating in the country. He said his company is considering Davao as a potential hub for Asean connectivity.
The airline recently launched its new flights from Davao to Cebu, Palawan and Boracay, and fly-thru via Cebu City to international destinations in Singapore, Taipei and Seoul.
“I am very happy because no need for me to travel from Davao to Manila just for direct travel to KL. And now with AirAsia’s new route, it’s only four hours from Davao to KL,” Mohd said. Maya M. Padillo
