CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao – Policemen, backed by military personnel, clashed Monday with an armed group in the Sultan Kudarat town of Kalamansig, resulting in the recovery of a high-power firearm.
Philippine Marines personnel accompanied the local police serving an arrest warrant against gang leader Tinte Taup for murder and arson in Sitio Basiawan, Barangay Datu Ito Andong, when an armed confrontation erupted around 7:00 a.m.
“Taup and his men, armed with firearms, opened fire at the arresting team which led to brief encounter,” Brigadier General Cirilito Sobejana, the Army’s 6th Infantry Division commander, said.
Sobejana said Taup and his members later split up and fled to various directions to evade pursuing government troops.
Government forces recovered at the clash site an M16 rifle with magazine and ammunition, two handheld radios, and camouflage uniforms.
“Our joint operating troops are still relentlessly scouring the area to go after Taup,” Sobejana said, as he urged government forces to intensify their search operation against the gang to prevent them from further harassing the townspeople. (PNA)
