CAMP SK PENDA-TUN, Maguindanao — One of the inmates of Marawi City district jail set free by Maute terrorists and Abu Sayyaf Group after they seized the city on May 23 has voluntarily surrendered to police in Lanao del Sur, Chief Supt. Reuben Sindac said Wednesday.
Sindac, regional director for the police in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm), identified the escapee turned surrenderee as Jaber Macabago Lao, 40.
Quoting a report from Lumbatan town police office in Lanao del Sur, Sindac said the surrender of Lano was made possible with the help of Mayor Allan Lao of Lumbatan. It was not clear if the mayor and the escapee are related by blood or by affinity.
Sindac said the escapee was turned over to Lumbatan police office at 3:45 Tuesday and eventually to Lanao del Sur police provincial office in Marawi City at about 6 p.m.
Lao told police he was one of the inmates from Marawi City jail and told to escape by the Maute gunmen during the early days of Marawi siege.
It was not clear of Lao was part of the other detainees used by the Maute to fight along with them against the government forces.
Lao has been turned over to Bureau of Jail Management and Penology BJMP-Marawi City). (EOF/PNA
