ZAMBOANGA CITY–The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has yet to select the athletes who will represent Mindanao in the national event of the Philippine National Games or the Batang Pinoy.
This, as the holding of the Batang Pinoy-Minda-nao leg might not push through after it has been postponed twice due to the Marawi City siege.
Dr. Cecilia Atilano, city sports development officer, on Friday said the holding of the Mindanao leg of Ba-tang Pinoy was originally scheduled last July 9, but was moved to September as fighting broke out in Marawi City on May 23.
Atilano said the games’ date was again moved to November since fighting still continues in the besieged city.
Atilano said that this year’s Batang Pinoy-Min-danao leg is set to be held in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental.
“The parents might not allow their children to join the Batang Pinoy since Oroquieta City is near to Marawi City. We are hoping that they will transfer the games’ venue so that we can participate in the Mindanao leg,” she said.
She said Zamboanga City is set to send a 120-athlete delegation to parti-cipate in 18 sports events in the national competition of Batang Pinoy.
She said there is a need to conduct the Batang Pinoy-Mindanao leg to select the athletes who will represent the region in the national games, which is scheduled on February 2018.
The Batang Pinoy is the national youth sports competition of the Philip-pines for athletes under 15 years old.
It also includes the participation of the out-of-school-youths. PNA
