Netizens urged Davao officials to do something about the proliferation of gangs and the repeated gang wars in the city.
A gang riot in front of the Post Office along the Boy Scout Rotunda in Roxas Avenue scared motorists and passersby last Saturday afternoon.
“Rival gangs were throwing rocks and other projectiles against each other while cars and public utility jeepneys got caught in between,” Philippine Information Officer Rudolph Alama said. Alama posted the incident on his Facebook timeline Saturday and it got a lot of comments from netizens who called on the authorities to take note of the continued existence of gangs in the city.
Alama said gangs now are very brazen in engaging rival gangs in riots along downtown areas. He said he also witnessed a gang riot along Palma Gil near People’s Park last February.
He said he was traversing along Ramon Magsaysay Avenue going to the Post Office area when he saw men armed with rocks running along the area. The traffic stood still as rocks went flying from one gang to another.
“A group of vehicles including mine were caught in the middle of gang war rocks being thrown. The other gang retreated into Clifford Park,” he said.
Netizens said the area at the back of the Madrazo Fruit Stand along Ponciano Street has become a lair of unscrupulous people, including those allegedly wanted by the police in some areas.
Others took note of a group of skateboarders who are regularly seen along Mercury Drug at C. M. Recto Avenue who use their skateboards even on the streets without fear of the passing vehicles.
Davao City Police Office (DCPO) Chief Alexander Tagum commented on Alama’s post and said that personnel of the Mobile Patrol Group apprehended 11 persons Saturday afternoon for alarm and scandal.
Tagum said those arrested for being caught in a rumble between warring gangs in a public area were Aljon Joven Gurondiano, 18 years old, single, construction worker and a resident of Purok 2, Block 10, Doña Asuncion, Brgy.
