If you’re a genuine dog lover, you do not want to see your dog suffer from any diseases, especially mange. It is a very common skin disease caused by parasitic mites among dogs found everywhere in our city.
Veterinarian specialist ShyrAnn B. Ngaosi of Davao Vetlane Animal Clinic and Surgery along Mintal road said mange is a highly contagious disease characterized by crusty or scaly skin, pruritus, and alopecia caused by mites.
Dr. Ngaosi explained that there are three types of mange, namely, demodectic, sarcoptic (canine scabies-zoonotic that can be transmitted to humans) and otodectic (found inside ears).
But she said there are a lot of factors to be considered. Mange is common in dogs that are malnourished, with poor hygiene and nutrition, exposed to infected animals, and weak immune system.
Also, hereditary predisposition to demodectic mange takes place, she said.
The veterinarian said in the demodectic type, the mites are usually present as normal flora of the dog’s skin. And in small numbers they usually cause no clinical disease. However, it becomes opportunistic when the dog is weak or engaged to the above mentioned factors, she explained.
Dr. Ngaosi said mange can be avoided through proper grooming (like keeping the skin and ears clean), proper nutrition, limit/avoid exposure to infected animals and avoid breeding infected dogs that has history especially those who severely suffered from demodectic mange since hereditary factor is also considered.
