The song composers of “Takbo”, a song composed to convince Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to run for president, have offered to write another song if the mayor finally decides to join the presidential race in 2016.
This was a commitment by singer/composer Jimmy Bondoc in an interview on Monday. “I will make a more chant-type of song that will rally the spirit of unity. Kung titingnanmoang roster ng candidates siyalangyungnaiiba eh. Basically angresult din nitoiba(If you will see the roster of candidates he is unique. Basically the result will also be different),” Bondoc said.
Bondoc said the “Takbo” song was conceptualized four days before the start of the filing of the Certificate of Candidacy (CoC) following Duterte’s announcement that he is not running. He said he wrote the song overnight and recorded and shoot for the song in just one night.
“It was about two days of work. We musicians believed that he should run,” he said.
Bondoc co-artist Paolo Santos, who is also part of the song, said it wasn’t hard to convince other artists to join for the recording.
“These are the artists that we really worked with. Sinabikona (I said) if you are Duterte supporters you are welcome to take part in this project,” Bondoc said.
“Takbo” focuses on hope and inspiration. The song serves as a political rally that urges Duterte to run and serve the country.
“The song is inspiring because of the subject. It might be a good song because the subject is good. I don’t think I can do that to anyone else. Honestly, while writing the song what came to my mind were my friends who were victims of stealing, family with members who are victims of killing, naiisipkoyung childhood konadatinaglalaro kami sakalyengayonhindinanaminhinayaanmgapamang-kin konalumabas. NaiisipkotalagayungPilipinasin its real formyunghindi promotion lang ng kung ano man (I thought of my childhood when we were allowed to play on the street but now we no longer allow our nephews/nieces to go out. I am really thinking of the Philippines in its real form not for promotion only),” Bondoc said.
Bondoc also expressed optimism Duterte will run despite his pronouncement of not joining the presidential race. He is banking on the theory of substitution of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC).
“Tatakboyun (He will run)! We were so sad but we were also expecting it kasimatagalnayung theory ng substitution (because the theory of substitution has been there) and we were thinking that it is the overall plan of Duterte. Nalungkottalagaakokasi (I was really sad) we are hopeful that he can really do to the entire Philippines what he did to Davao,” he said.
Bondoc said they look at Duterte as a real man with real right and tested solutions that the country really needs now. He said that before he and his friends were divided when it comes to other candidates but when it comes to Duterte there is no contest and everyone agrees even his elite friends.
“Personally we never met never know him but we know what Duterte has done for Davao. Interview pa langni Mayor sa TV and onlinebusognaako (If it is only an interview of Duterte on TV or online I am full). It’s a wide spectrum from the upper to the lowest namgakakilalanamin(that we know),” Santos said. Santos added what the country needs now is a radical change.
“But of course decision ni mayor yan, perohindinamanmasamangmangarapna (of the mayor but it is not bad to wish) so to speak. If he does he can have our full support sabinyawalasiyangmakinarya, walasiyang mechanismwalasiyang funds kung kailanganniya kami hindinaman kami nakatalisatrabahonamin(he said he has not machinery, he has no mechanism, he has no funds if he needs us we are not tied to our work),” he said.
Santos is hopeful that his kids will live in a more secure Philippines.
“For mayor he has to follow his heart. It is always up to him and it’s his fate kung anoangtawag ng Diyossakanya(what is God’s call for him). For us if he can do the country a great service by running we will be personally indebted to him,” Bondoc said.
Bondoc said their support to Duterte is based on hope and is not based on some romantic notion that he is the Superman. He said they support Duterte’s platform and track record.
“We just hope that he runs. Kahit durian langangbayadniyasaamin okay na kami (If he only pays us durian it is fine for us),” Bondoc said.
“Kahitwalakahitpakfrylang (Even nothing even only pakfry),” Santos added.
