Ana Theresa Williams BSN RN
I learned in college that allergies can’t be cured, but it can be controlled and managed well.
Thank God for my faithful doctor friend, immunologist Dr. Maricar Decena-Ang at San Pedro Hospital-Medical Arts Building. She prescribed me a non-sedating antihistamine drug and other related drugs to help control and manage my condition being allergic to several things, including dust and pollution such as cigarette smoke. And it’s very unfortunate that these irritants are just every-where!
Dr. Ang also gave me a nasal spray prescription. Before, I was too lazy to use this saline solution except now that I really have to or I will suffer later from my allergy attacks. Then she added further another prescribed nasal spray to that effect.
This first nasal spray is called Muconase (Sodium Chloride), which liquifies and loosens crusted or accumulated mucus and helps restore moisture to dry or congested nasal passages associated with cold, runny nose, allergies; dry air from cold weather or airplane flights; dust, pollutant; overuse of nasal decongestants/nasal sterile spray; use of steroid nasal spray; post nasal drip; epistaxis or nose bleeding; rebound sinus reaction from drugs and smog.
This saline solution for nasal spray also provides natural relief of nasal congestion due to dry irritated, crusty or inflamed nasal passages, low humidity, heat, en-vironmental factors and air travel.
Also, good for me that I can ask one anytime from my brother-in-law, who is a family medicine practitioner, since he stores a lot of this Muconase drug whether in his clinic or at home; also because my sister, who is his wife, and their eldest son both have asthma also. But if you buy it in any pharmacy, it only costs less than P100.
Once allergies, like asthma, are present in your genes, you will also have to live with it until your last breath.
In order for me to know the substances that causes me allergy, my immu-nologist did an allergy skin test on me. Aside from those common allergens I mentioned, I am also allergic to pollens from coconut tree and cockroaches – and I really hate them when they start to fly on your face. Yikes!
But I noticed that when I stayed for 6 months in London, England I was allergy-free completely! Obviously, there was no sight of coconut trees in that rich foreign land as well as no disgusting cockroaches including rats and ants!
Meanwhile, the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology said allergies are among the most common chronic conditions worldwide. Allergy symptoms of allergies range from making you miserable to putting you at risk for life-threatening reactions.
If you believe in herbal treatments, then you might not live longer especially those drugs that has a mark of “without approved therapeutic claim.” The former Davao Medical Society president, Dr. Vegloure Maguinsay, described and translated it in Tagalog as “Gamot na walang bisa.”
Thus, it doesn’t make any sense when buying her-bal drugs or those drugs with that mark be-cause you’re just wasting your money. But if you have lots of money, then we are not stopping you from buying herbal drugs. We just care about the com-plications you will suffer while taking herbal drugs or those drugs with no approved therapeutic claim. Who else will treat you for such cases? They are the medical doctors. It will always be the doctors who are the last resort of the patients, sad to know. Therefore, beware of non-essential drugs for your medical conditions!
